Spain's Telefonica buys Internet phone provider Jajah

Spain's Telefonica said on Wednesday the 02 units were purchased, Jajah, a provider of Internet phone service in the United States and Israel established for 145 million euros (207 million euros).

The all-cash transaction is subject to approval by the antitrust authorities of Spain, the former state monopoly in a statement.

Like Skype, Jajah lets users make free calls between users on the Internet or make very cheap calls to landline or mobile phone.

The firm has 25 million customers, aroused a keen interest of Microsoft and Cisco. It was founded in 2005 by Austrian entrepreneur Roman Scharf and Daniel Mattes.

"This acquisition expands our communication and delivery of JAJAH opens up new possibilities in the field of voice communication, said the General Director of Telefonica Europe, Matthew Key, in a statement.
