Nokia ponders the laptop business

We have just caught a glimpse of a Reuters report of Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, who is Nokia’s current boss, saying on Finnish TV what amounts to Nokia’s first official acknowledgement that they are prepared to enter the PC industry.

In recent weeks, we have seen PC manufacturers announced cell phones to add to their range of mobile PCs, and we now observe that this cuts both ways. Nokia may merely be the first handset maker to try its hand at the portable computer business.

Either way, it would be a safe bet that in the future laptops will come with built in voice capabilities, and so will handphone devices come with more and more laptop features. The question that must be asked is this: Will they use Microsoft Windows or new version of the Symbian OS for a Nokia laptop? One can’t help but suspect a modified Symbian OS is under development. After all, Nokia did buy the entire Symbian operation a little while ago.

Mobile Internet Search Engine Use Jumped 14% Between 2007 and 2008

According to surveys conducted by ABI Research in 2007 and 2008, 70% of respondents who used their mobile phones to access the Internet sought information through mobile search engines last year. That represents a substantial 14% increase over 2007. The consumption of mobile data services, including search, has steadily increased year over year as indicated by the use of email and web from a mobile phone.

That jump in mobile search usage is nearly double the increase in users who said they accessed mobile websites generally. “Mobile search represents a utility for information anytime and anywhere,” says senior analyst Jeff Orr. “With a few keywords, one can quickly identify movie times, the discography of a musical artist, recommendations for a local eatery and so much more.”

Some types of content accessed via mobile phones rose in popularity from 2007 to 2008. These included news, game downloads, music downloads, and especially video downloads. A significantly lower percentage in 2008 reported downloading a ringtone than the prior year, while the interest in location information, social networking and sports remained about the same.

“Use of the mobile phone goes well beyond voice calls,” says Orr. “A significant percentage of respondents say they use their handset for mobile email and web access, reflecting the broader access to inexpensive or all-you-can-eat mobile data services in the US.”

The surveys, each of which sampled more than 1000 mobile phone users in the United States aged 14-59 and across a wide range of demographic profiles, were conducted in November 2007 and December 2008. They queried users’ preferences with regard to a variety of mobile email and web usage questions.

India’s Tata may buy into Asean and African telcos

India’s Tata Communications is looking to expand its presence in Southeast Asia and Africa following its recent acquisition of South African fixed-line firm Neotel, reports Dow Jones Newswires. “We have invested in Neotel in South Africa and will take a similar approach in other emerging markets in Southeast Asia and in the future in Africa,” said Srinivas Adeppalli, senior vice-president of corporate strategy. According to the company’s new CFO, Sanjay Baweja, Tata Communications has around INR15 billion (USD303.7 million) in cash at present, dispelling earlier reports that the company’s cash position had reached a critical level. Adeppalli added that the company’s capital expenditure plans of USD400 million to USD500 million for the current fiscal year were on track, and would concentrate mainly on undersea cabling to connect India with Europe and South Africa.

According to reports last month, Tata Communications has approached the Indian government - a 26 percent shareholder in the firm - regarding a new rights issue to raise INR10 billion, plus taking on a further INR20 billion in debt. As well as the submarine cable project, the company is thought to need funds in order to acquire spectrum suitable for WiMAX in India’s forthcoming ‘Broadband Wireless Access’ (BWA) auction, which is scheduled to begin later this year alongside India’s 3G spectrum auction. The company is also looking to participate in the Tata Group’s sale of a stake in its mobile subsidiary, Tata Teleservices, to Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, Adeppalli said. NTT DoCoMo has agreed to buy a 26 percent stake in Tata Teleservices for USD2.7 billion. Tata Communications holds around 15 percent in Tata Teleservices and the report adds that Tata Communications may offer some of its stake to be sold to the Japanese firm.

Windows Mobile 7 Coming Next Year

Microsoft has had an conference call earlier today, and Steve Ballmer spoke about Windows Mobile as one of its 7 big businesses.

According to Ballmer, Microsoft has been ramping up expenditure in the Windows Mobile segment over the last few years, and at $900 million per year, Windows Mobile is close to 4% of Microsoft’s operating expenditure and has 2000 employees (RIM has 2900).  This still however leaves Windows Mobile as a “somewhat unprofitable” Microsoft business, and with Windows Mobile currently 3rd place in market share behind Symbian and RIM.

Ballmer re-affirmed his oft-repeated statement that Microsoft will not be making a Microsoft Phone, saying it was

committed to the licensing model.  There was however a plan to extend revenue-generating opportunities to services.

One statement of note regarding Windows Live was that Microsoft was hamstrung in bundling Live services with the PC due to their Consent Decree from Anti-trust ruling against them nearly a decade ago, and one does wonder how this ruling continues to prevent obvious integration opportunities which would make Windows Mobile and the various services around it a much more powerful solution than it is now.

Regarding the operating system itself, Steve Ballmer mentioned the unveiling of Windows Mobile 6.5 last week, and also clearly stated Windows Mobile 7 will be coming next year.  He noted that he felt the continuing expansion of the smartphone segment into the whole phone segment should help Windows Mobile to continue growing despite the downturn in the economy, and that Windows Mobile is particularly well suited for low cost smartphones with many different from factors.

Regarding the future of Windows Mobile, Steve made it clear that he saw Windows and Windows Mobile as two sides of a single project, and that there is now and will be even more shared technologies.  Specifically he mentioned features like the browser, presentation surface (Silverlight?) and even, in the future, the kernel, and that the amount of shared technology will only increase over time.

India adds record 15.41 mobile million users in January

India, the world's fastest-expanding mobile market, added 15.41 million wireless users last month -- the biggest monthly growth ever, according to government data Saturday. India's number of wireless subscribers grew by 15.41 million in January after swelling by 10.81 million in December.

January's increase was a record for monthly wireless subscriber growth, according to figures from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) posted on its website.

The total number of wireless connections stood in January at 362.30 million, up from 233.63 million in the same month a year earlier.

Combined with fixed line users, the country of 1.1 billion people now has over 400 million telephone connections.

The country's blistering mobile phone customer growth has been helped by one of the world's lowest cellular phone tariff structures of less than two cents a minute.

India's "mobile revolution" is mainly confined to the cities, but the real prize for phone companies is the vast rural market, where nearly 70 percent of the population live, analysts say.

The country's teledensity -- the number of people owning a telephone out of every 100 people -- stood at 34.50 by end-January, Trai said, meaning there is still a huge untapped market for connections.

This is in contrast to such regions as Europe and North America where the mobile market is saturated, analysts say.

Twelve years ago, teledensity was around three per every one hundred people while in 2005 it stood at just 11.

In the wireless segment, Reliance Communications, India's second-largest mobile company by users, registered the highest growth rate in January at 8.1 percent, adding 4.95 million users, bringing its subscriber base to 66.29 million.

The jump in Reliance customers came after the company began offering global system for mobile communications or GSM technology as well as discounts to new clients.

Others such as Bharti Airtel, the country's top mobile company, and Vodafone Essar, controlled by Britain's Vodafone, registered between 3-4 percent of growth in January.

Global consultancy Gartner forecasts India's mobile phone owners will total 737 million by 2012.

Facebook, Nokia look to bring social network to mobiles

Facebook is in discussions with Nokia on ways to integrate the wildly popular social network into mobile phones made by the Finnish giant, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

The newspaper, citing "people familiar with the matter," said Palo Alto, California-based Facebook and Nokia were discussing a partnership that would embed parts of the social network into some Nokia phones.

The Journal said the talks have been going on for months. Financial terms of the potential deal could not be obtained, it said.

The newspaper said Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, was deciding whether it wanted to team up with an established Web player like Facebook or "build a social network from the ground up."

It said the two companies were looking at potentially integrating contact information stored in Facebook with a phone's address book.

"When users looked up a contact, they could see whether their Facebook friends were logged on, send them messages and post comments on their profile pages," the Journal said.

Facebook is also working with US handset maker Palm on integrating aspects of the social network into its new mobile operating system, the Journal said, and has also held talks with another US mobile phone maker, Motorola.

It quoted a Facebook spokeswoman as saying the company is "dedicated to working with and developing partnerships with mobile operators and device makers all over the world."
