The Japanese already use their cell phones to shop, exchange e-mail and watch digital TV. Now comes another dimension to the ever-growing list of eye-catching mobile features: the 3D display.

The Hitachi Ltd.'s Wooo H001 cell phone, which went on sale last month in Japan for 50,000 yen ($510), has a tiny button that says "3D" below the keyboard. Push it, and the screen's image will appear three-dimensional, seeming to protrude slightly from the 3.1-inch liquid crystal display.

Similar to how 3D movies and TVs work, the technology takes advantage of how the human mind understands depth and spacing. By sending a slightly different image to each eye, the 3D cell phone creates the illusion of 3D, almost like a miniature hologram.

Some 3D theater and the 3D Hyundai TV require special glasses to shut out the image meant for the other eye. But the Wooo phone comes with its own invisible barriers packed inside the display to ensure the same effect.

Watching a tiny 3D image or animation video on a cell phone is fun — but for a few seconds. It gets a bit tiring on the eyes, once the novelty wears off.

The 3D feature works for any image, but it would be more enjoyable if there were more mobile content especially designed for 3D. Reading e-mail in 3D is simply nerve-racking.

There are no plans to sell the 3D cell in the United States and other overseas markets, according to mobile carrier KDDI Corp., which offers the phone. KDDI doesn't disclose the number of 3D handsets sold so far.

Regarding the operating system itself, Steve Ballmer mentioned the unveiling of Windows Mobile 6.5 last week, and also clearly stated Windows Mobile 7 will be coming next year. He noted that he felt the continuing expansion of the smartphone segment into the whole phone segment should help Windows Mobile to continue growing despite the downturn in the economy, and that Windows Mobile is particularly well suited for low cost smartphones with many different from factors.

Regarding the future of Windows Mobile, Steve made it clear that he saw Windows and Windows Mobile as two sides of a single project, and that there is now and will be even more shared technologies. Twelve years ago, teledensity was around three per every one hundred people while in 2005 it stood at just 11.

In the wireless segment, Reliance Communications, India's second-largest mobile company by users, registered the highest growth rate in January at 8.1 percent, adding 4.95 million users, bringing its subscriber base to 66.29 million.

The jump in Reliance customers came after the company began offering global system for mobile communications or GSM technology as well as discounts to new clients.

Unbranded Chinese handsets, which have become a rage among the lower middle class, have found themselves on the wrong side of the law following reports that these handsets were being used in terrorist activities. The handsets used by terrorists usually do not have IMEI numbers that every GSM cell phone is legally bound to have. The IMEI is an identification number that is unique to each GSM handset -- in most countries a legal prerequisite for handsets to operate.

In India, in recent years, we have seen an explosive growth in the mobile telephony sector. Apart from handsets from mainstream manufacturers, Chinese phones - many of them spurious, with little or no R&D going into their production - started flooding the market. While most Chinese handsets have IMEI numbers, many do not, and it is these handsets that the government has targeted. In a recent directive, the Government had asked all telcom companies to cut off services to all handsets that lack an IMEI number. The last date to implement this directive is January 6, 2009.

However, according to a recent Economic Times report, the Government is planning to extend the deadline until March 31, 2009, as the industry has developed a software that can assign an IMEI number to these phones with the help of a software update. In October, the DoT (Department of Telecommunications) had asked companies to store IMEI numbers in their Equipment Identity Register (EIR) databases. EIR is used to ensure that calls made from a stolen handset having a unique IMEI can be traced and blocked - rendering it useless. The same technology can be used to identify cell phones that lack an IMEI or just have a couple of zeroes for the IMEI number to effectively bar calls from such handsets. Post the diktat, the COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India) is planning to approach the government to seek an extension until the the IMEI assigning software can be added into phones via the update.

The issues under consideration are the large user base for these phones and the fact that the handsets would be rendered useless after implementation of the directive, resulting in a loss to its innocent owners. The COAI is planning a drive to make people aware about the dangers of using a non-IMEI handset and about the software update that is expected to cost Rs. 100 per phone, which is a nominal amount considering it can save a phone from becoming useless.

The telecom companies also claim that they need some more time to install the software since the EIR equipment has to be imported. They have also asked the government to direct the customs authorities to ban the import of such handsets into the country.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) will be instructing telecos to bar calls originating from phones which do not have an IMEI number or have zero as their IMEI number. IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number,is an unique 14-digit code used to identify valid devices.

There are about 1.6 crore Chinese-made and locally-assembled handsets in use that don’t have IMEI numbers. Even mobile phones that have all zeroes or no zero in their IMEI code will also be barred.

The DoT move comes after security agencies found the mobile phones used by terrorists in the recent blasts did not have IMEI numbers. Sales of Chinese handsets constitute about 13.3 per cent (or Rs 4,000 crore) of the Rs 30,000-crore annual mobile handset market in the country.

By using the IMEI number, the security agencies not only can block the handset, but also retrieve call details from the recovered handset. Even CDMA mobile phones have an electronic serial number equivalent to the IMEI number in GSM mobile phones.

"However, most of the China-make mobile phones carry fake IMEI numbers. In some case, several of such handsets have the same IMEI number. In such cases, it becomes virtually impossible to extract information about the calls made from these mobile phones," the official said.

Local dealers of Chinese handsets are exploiting this by offering to change the IMEI number if your phone has a code with all zeroes or no zero. Mobile phone makers said they are working to plug the loophole as a change in IMEI is not legal in India, unlike the UK and Poland. Software to change IMEI numbers is freely available on websites. The government fears militants might use such software to switch the IMEI code of a mobile phone several times during a call, thus making the caller virtually untraceable.
